What is Boris FX Suite and what each tool is for

Boris FX is a software company, founded in 1995, that makes tools for video post-production, visual effects, photos and audio. Boris FX Suite is its all-in-one bundle: instead of buying Sapphire, Mocha Pro or Silhouette one at a time, you get 11 of its products together. Boris FX's own Suite page calls the current edition the 2026 Release.

Many of the tools began at other companies that Boris FX later acquired. It bought Imagineer Systems, the developer of Mocha, in 2014 and GenArts, the developer of Sapphire, in 2016. SilhouetteFX followed in 2019, CrumplePop and SynthEyes in 2023, and the Sequoia, Samplitude and Music Studio audio workstations came from MAGIX in 2025. Boris FX's About page credits the company with 3 Academy Awards and 5 Emmy Awards.

The 11 products fall into five groups, and the rest of this guide takes them one group at a time:

• Effects and finishing: Sapphire and Continuum, two large collections of effects and transitions.
• Tracking, roto and clean-up: Mocha Pro and Silhouette.
• 3D camera tracking: SynthEyes.
• Photos and particles: Optics for still images and Particle Illusion Pro for particle effects.
• Audio: CrumplePop for audio repair and clean-up, plus Sequoia, Samplitude and Music Studio, three audio workstations that run on Windows only.

Some of these tools are plug-ins rather than programs of their own. Sapphire and Continuum, for example, add effects inside an application you already edit or composite in, such as After Effects, Premiere Pro, Avid Media Composer, DaVinci Resolve or Nuke. SynthEyes and the three audio workstations are standalone applications. Mocha Pro, Silhouette, Optics, Particle Illusion and CrumplePop can work both ways.

Two points are worth settling early. First, the Suite does not include the big editing and compositing applications: After Effects, Premiere Pro, DaVinci Resolve, Avid Media Composer and Nuke are not part of it. To use Sapphire, Continuum or another plug-in inside your usual editor, that editor has to be installed separately and be on the tool's host list. Second, not everything Boris FX owns is in the bundle. The company has acquired VEGAS Pro and iZotope, but Boris FX's Suite page does not list either of them among the included products.

Sapphire and Continuum are the Suite's two effects collections. Both are plug-ins that add effects and transitions to your host application, and both have Mocha tracking built in. They overlap, but they are not the same collection twice.

Sapphire

Sapphire is a collection of GPU-accelerated visual effects and transitions for editors, VFX artists, colourists and motion designers. Boris FX's product page counts more than 270 effects and transitions and more than 3,000 presets, with categories that include Light & Flares, Blur & Distort, Render & Composite, Stylize, and Transition & Time.

You are not limited to the presets. The Effect and Transition Builder, also called Sapphire Builder, is a node-based tool for building your own effects and transitions, and Flare Designer lets you design custom lens flares. Mocha planar tracking and masking is integrated into Sapphire effects, which helps when an effect should stay on one moving part of the frame instead of covering the whole shot.

Continuum

Continuum is a large collection of effects, transitions and workflow tools for editors and content creators. Boris FX's product page lists 300+ effects, 40 transitions and 5,000+ presets. Alongside the effects, it includes named tools for jobs that come up in ordinary editing work:

• Title Studio for building 2D and 3D vector titles.
• Primatte Studio for green-screen keying.
• Particle Illusion, a 3D particle generator included inside Continuum.
• Machine-learning tools including DeNoise ML, UpRes ML, Face ML, Witness Protection ML, License Plate ML, Motion Blur ML, Retimer ML, Depth Map ML, Frame Fixer ML and Deinterlace ML.
• Other named tools such as Pixel Chooser, Beauty Studio, Cinematographer Toolkit, Film Stocks, Beat Reactor and Audio Visualizer.

Mocha tracking is built into every Continuum effect. Boris FX also groups Continuum's filters by function into 20 Continuum Units, with names such as Blur and Sharpen, Color and Tone, Film Style, Image Restoration, Key and Blend, Lens, Match Move, Transitions and Warp.

How Sapphire and Continuum differ

Going by how Boris FX presents them, the clearest difference is what each is organised around. Sapphire's categories centre on light and lens flares, blur and distortion, compositing, stylised looks and transitions, with dedicated tools for designing your own effects and flares. Continuum's units cover many of the same kinds of effect, and its named tools reach into titling, keying, restoration, beauty work and machine learning, which sit close to day-to-day editing.

So if your work is mostly about the look of a shot, such as music videos, promos or title sequences, Sapphire is the collection organised around that. If you cut interviews, documentaries or corporate films and want titles, keying and repair tools without leaving your editor, look at Continuum first, because that is where Title Studio, Primatte Studio and the Image Restoration unit sit. With the Suite you do not have to pick one, and their host lists differ too: Sapphire lists Photoshop, Flame and Fusion Studio, while Continuum lists Final Cut Pro and Apple Motion.

Three terms first, in plain words. Tracking means measuring how something moves through a shot, so that a mask, an effect or a new image can move with it. Rotoscoping, or roto, means drawing shapes around an object across the frames of a shot so it can be separated from the rest of the picture. Clean-up means removing what should not be there, such as a wire or an unwanted object. Done by hand, all three are slow, and they are the jobs Mocha Pro and Silhouette are built for.

Mocha Pro

Mocha Pro is planar motion tracking software used for rotoscoping, object removal, stabilisation and VFX compositing. It runs as a plug-in inside a host application or as a standalone application. A planar tracker follows a surface, such as a screen, a wall or a sign, rather than a single point. In Mocha Pro, planar tracking is GPU-accelerated and is the foundation of every other tool. Next to the Track, AdjustTrack and Stabilize modules, Boris FX's product page names these:

• Remove for object and wire removal, with clean-plate generation.
• Insert for screen inserts and match moves, with mesh warping.
• Lens for lens distortion calibration and correction.
• 3D Camera Solver, which uses SynthEyes' core 3D tracking algorithms.
• PowerMesh for sub-planar tracking of warped or organic surfaces, used for warp stabilisation and mesh-warped roto.
• Mega Plate, which stitches extended frames for clean plates, and ReOrient, which stabilises the horizon in 360° footage.
• Machine-learning tools such as Matte Refine ML, Face Detection and Point Track ML.

If you have an After Effects subscription, you already have a lighter version. Mocha AE is a free, reduced version of Mocha Pro's planar tracking and masking tools that is bundled with After Effects, and it runs only as an After Effects plug-in. Both do planar tracking and roto. Boris FX's comparison lists what only Mocha Pro has, including the Remove, Insert, Lens and stabilisation modules, the 3D Camera Solver, 360/VR support, stereoscopic 3D, the standalone application and Linux support. Silhouette

Silhouette is a rotoscoping, paint and node-based compositing application for film and TV finishing, combined with machine-learning tools. It runs as a standalone application and as a plug-in for After Effects, Premiere Pro, Nuke, DaVinci Resolve, Fusion and Flame. Mocha Pro is built on tracking; Silhouette is built as an application for roto, paint and compositing, with these parts:

• Roto with shape types that include B-Spline, Bézier, X-Spline and Magnetic Freehand.
• Paint with a raster paint system, AutoPaint, and clone tools.
• Compositing that is node-based, with more than 400 nodes stated on Boris FX's page.
• Keying with Primatte, zMatte and Power Matte.
• Machine-learning tools such as Mask ML, Matte Assist ML, Matte Refine ML, Depth Map ML, Head Track ML, Optical Flow ML, Retime ML, UpRes ML and Denoise ML.
• Other Boris FX tools inside it: a Mocha Pro node, Sapphire, Continuum filters and Particle Illusion.

A practical way to choose between the two: if the job is to follow a surface and then remove, replace or stabilise something, start in Mocha Pro. If the job is detailed roto and paint across many frames, and you want to composite the result in the same place, Silhouette is the fuller environment. Silhouette includes a Mocha Pro node, so you do not have to treat them as rivals.

SynthEyes is a standalone 3D camera tracking and matchmoving application. It works out how the real camera moved during a shot, and tracks objects in it, so that computer-generated elements can be combined with the live footage.

That is a different job from the planar tracking in Mocha Pro. A planar track follows a surface in the picture. A camera solve rebuilds the movement of the camera itself in 3D, which is what a 3D artist needs before placing a CG object into a moving shot. Mocha Pro's 3D Camera Solver uses SynthEyes' core tracking algorithms, but SynthEyes is the dedicated application for this work. Features named on Boris FX's page include:

• the Mocha Point Tracker, and automatic tracking with machine learning;
• 3D planar tracking and geometric hierarchy (GeoH) tracking;
• AprilTags support and lens distortion calibration;
• 360° VR support;
• Synthia, for natural-language scripting.

A solve is only useful once it reaches the software where the 3D or compositing work happens. Boris FX names Blender, Houdini, LightWave, Nuke, After Effects, Maya, 3ds Max, Cinema 4D, Fusion/Resolve and Flame as export targets. Check your hardware before relying on it: the published requirements for SynthEyes 2026 are 8 GB of RAM at minimum with 16 GB recommended, and on Windows and Linux at least 8 GB of video memory.

If you are a 3D or VFX artist adding CG to live-action footage, SynthEyes may be the main reason you want the Suite. If you edit and never work in 3D, you can leave it closed.

Optics

Optics is the Suite's tool for still images. It is a photo-editing application that adds cinematic filters, optical lens effects, lighting and colour looks to photos. Boris FX's page lists over 187 filters and thousands of presets, including more than 600 film stocks and looks, 173 optical lens flare presets that come from Sapphire, more than 800 gobo lighting patterns and more than 1,700 particle presets. It also includes Mocha masking and Beauty Studio, with machine-learning masking tools such as Face ML, Depth ML and Mask ML.

Optics works as a plug-in for Adobe Photoshop and Adobe Lightroom, and as a standalone application. With Optics 2026.5, Boris FX added plug-in support for Apple Photos, Capture One and Affinity Photo. It runs on macOS 12 or later and on Windows 10 or 11, with no Linux version. It is a tool for people who work on photos; a video editor who never touches stills can ignore it.

Particle Illusion Pro

Particle Illusion is a particle generator: it builds 3D effects out of many small moving elements for motion graphics, VFX, titles and lower thirds. The Suite page names it Particle Illusion Pro. It runs as a standalone application, and its plug-in version is part of Continuum. Boris FX's product page also describes After Effects integration, using the After Effects camera, 3D layers and lights. Named features include fluid dynamics, a 3D workspace with a camera that supports depth of field and motion blur, forces and deflectors, and a large library of preset emitters.

Here is a fair point in favour of not paying. The standalone Particle Illusion runs free, without a licence, for non-commercial and personal use. Commercial use needs a licence, and Boris FX's trial page adds that background import requires one too. If you only experiment with particles on personal, non-commercial projects, the free version may be all you need.

CrumplePop

CrumplePop is a set of AI audio repair and clean-up plug-ins, plus a standalone app, aimed at video editors, podcasters and audio engineers. The plug-ins named on Boris FX's page are AudioDenoise, EchoRemover, WindRemover, TrafficRemover, ClipRemover, PopRemover, RustleRemover, Levelmatic and Voice Enhance. The standalone app is SoundApp, and SoundApp ARA, a plug-in version for audio workstations, was introduced with CrumplePop 2026.5.

The plug-ins come in VST3, AU and AAX formats, plus ARA2. Among video editors, Boris FX names Premiere Pro, DaVinci Resolve, Final Cut Pro, Avid Media Composer and VEGAS as hosts; among audio applications, Pro Tools, Reaper, Cubase, Logic, GarageBand, Audacity, Adobe Audition, Sequoia and Samplitude. CrumplePop runs on macOS 12 or later and on 64-bit Windows 10 or 11. For an editor, this is the part of the Suite that deals with the sound rather than the picture.

Sequoia, Samplitude and Music Studio

The other three audio products are digital audio workstations, or DAWs: programs for recording, editing, mixing and mastering sound. They are standalone applications, and they run on Windows only, on 64-bit Windows 10 or 11. None of them is available for macOS.

• Sequoia is a professional DAW aimed at mastering, broadcast, post-production and classical recording, with Dolby Atmos support, an ADM Editor, object-based editing and ARA2 support.
• Samplitude is a full DAW for music production, covering songwriting, MIDI, recording, mixing and mastering, with object-based editing.
• Music Studio is an entry-level DAW for composing, recording, mixing and mastering songs, with virtual instruments and loops.

If you edit on a Mac, count these three out: they are part of the Suite, but not something you can run. If you work on a Windows PC and also record, mix or master audio, try them before you pay for a separate audio program.

There is no single host list for the whole Suite, because support varies from product to product. Boris FX's Suite page gives a combined list: After Effects, Premiere Pro, Avid Media Composer, DaVinci Resolve, Nuke, Flame, VEGAS Pro, Final Cut Pro and Photoshop, plus standalone applications. The table below breaks that down for Sapphire, Continuum, Mocha Pro and Silhouette, using the host list Boris FX publishes for each one.

A dash means the application is not on that product's host list on Boris FX's pages. For Mocha Pro inside DaVinci Resolve, check before you rely on it: Resolve is listed on Boris FX's Mocha specs page, but not in the host list on the Mocha Pro product page. Supported host versions also change between releases, so check them against the version of the host you actually run.

The other tools fit in differently:

• Optics is a plug-in for Photoshop and Lightroom, and from Optics 2026.5 also for Apple Photos, Capture One and Affinity Photo, as well as a standalone application.
• Particle Illusion runs standalone, and its plug-in version is part of Continuum.
• CrumplePop works in video editors and audio applications through VST3, AU, AAX and ARA2, and as the standalone SoundApp.
• SynthEyes, Sequoia, Samplitude and Music Studio are standalone applications; SynthEyes passes its results to other software by export.

Mac, Windows and Linux

Boris FX's Suite page says its products run on macOS and Windows, with Linux support for some products only. Product by product, it looks like this:

• macOS, Windows and Linux: Sapphire, Mocha Pro, Silhouette and SynthEyes.
• macOS and Windows: Continuum, Optics, Particle Illusion and CrumplePop. Continuum and Optics have no Linux version. Continuum 2026.5's specs page lists Windows 11, and macOS 12 to 15 plus macOS 26; Final Cut Pro and Motion users need macOS 13.4 or later.
• Windows only: Sequoia, Samplitude and Music Studio.

Hardware needs differ just as much. Sapphire is GPU-accelerated but can render on the CPU if no GPU is available. Silhouette asks for 4 GB of graphics memory or more, and 8 GB for its machine-learning nodes. Requirements change between versions, so check the current system requirements for each tool you plan to use on borisfx.com before you buy, especially if you work on an older laptop.

Boris FX also sells several of these products on their own; its subscriptions FAQ names monthly options for Continuum, Mocha Pro, Optics, Sapphire and Silhouette. The offer on this page is the full Boris FX Suite at 999 MAD · 1 Year, and Mocha Pro and the other tools come as part of it. So the useful question is whether you will use enough of the Suite to justify it.

The Suite tends to make sense when two or more of its tools show up in your paid work. Some typical cases:

• A motion designer who finishes shots with Sapphire and tracks screens or signs with Mocha Pro.
• A compositor who moves between Mocha Pro, Silhouette and SynthEyes on the same project.
• An editor who uses Continuum for titles and keying, and CrumplePop to repair interview sound.
• A video maker who also shoots photos and finishes them in Optics.

It is probably more than you need in the following cases, and it is better to hear that before paying:

• You only need tracking and roto in After Effects. Start with Mocha AE, which is already bundled free with After Effects, and move up when you need something on Boris FX's Mocha Pro-only list, such as the Remove, Insert or Lens modules.
• You only experiment with particles on personal projects. The standalone Particle Illusion is free for non-commercial and personal use.
• Your edits rarely go beyond cuts, simple titles and basic colour. You would be paying for tools you may never open.
• You work on a Mac and were counting on the audio workstations. Sequoia, Samplitude and Music Studio are Windows-only, so they will not run for you, although CrumplePop does run on macOS.

Whichever way you lean, test first. Boris FX offers free trials for every Suite product through the Boris FX Hub, its free app for downloading, installing, licensing and trialling its products. You sign in with a free Boris FX account, and no payment information is needed to start a trial. The trials are not all the same: Sapphire runs for 30 days with a red X watermark on its output, Continuum renders also carry a red X, Mocha Pro is fully functional for 14 days before it reverts to a limited Learning Edition, Silhouette and Optics run for 14 days, and CrumplePop's trial output contains an audio watermark. Use a trial to test a tool on your own footage before you pay for anything.

In Morocco, the Suite fits best with people who already deliver paid work where tracking, clean-up or finishing takes real time. For example:

• Freelance editors and motion designers in Casablanca or Rabat producing commercials, corporate films and social campaigns for agencies and brands, where a finished look, clean titles or a replaced phone screen are ordinary requests. Sapphire, Continuum and Mocha Pro cover those.
• Post-production teams and small studios working on series, documentaries or TV, where Silhouette's roto and paint, Mocha Pro's Remove module and Continuum's restoration tools handle the slow parts of a finish.
• 3D and VFX artists placing CG into live footage, for whom SynthEyes solves the camera.
• Wedding and event videographers in Marrakech or Agadir who stabilise handheld shots in Mocha Pro and clean up location sound with CrumplePop.
• YouTubers and podcasters, in Tangier or anywhere else, who clean up voice recordings with CrumplePop and, on Windows, record and mix in Sequoia or Samplitude.
• Photographers and retouchers who want film looks, lens effects and lighting on stills with Optics.
