Software for Video Editors in Morocco — what to buy first, what to delay, and what is genuinely free

Editing is four jobs wearing one name. Cutting is the part everyone pictures. The other three — audio, colour and delivery — are where the hours actually go. A viewer forgives a soft image. They close the tab over muddy sound.

So the software has to hold up in the places no demo ever visits:

• Playback that does not stutter while you scrub the timeline, which is a hardware question before it is a software one.
• Captions, because most of your audience watches with the sound off. Automatic captions in English and French come out usable. Darija comes out rough, so plan to retype it.
• Audio repair — a hum, a room tone, a clip that peaks — without exporting to a second program.
• Colour that matches from shot to shot, long before anything artistic happens.
• Export presets for every destination: vertical, square, 16:9, and something light enough to send on WhatsApp.
• A project file a client can send back with notes six months later.

The demand nobody budgets for is storage. Footage fills drives faster than any other kind of work. A wedding shot on two cameras can outweigh a year of design files, and the backup is not optional — it is part of the job.

There are three serious answers in 2026, and they overlap far less than the arguments online suggest.

CapCut is built for short-form. Auto captions, beat-matched cuts, background removal, reframing for every aspect ratio — the operations creators repeat most have become single buttons. It runs on a mid-range phone, and the same project follows you to a desktop or a browser. CapCut Pro lifts the export ceiling, removes the premium-template watermark and opens the full AI toolkit.

Premiere Pro is for long-form and for working with other people: multicam, hundreds of clips, a project file an agency can open without argument. It arrives inside Adobe Creative Cloud alongside After Effects, Audition and Photoshop.

DaVinci Resolve is a colour grading suite that also edits, mixes audio and composites. Its free version is not a trial, does not watermark exports, and contains most of the program.

If you can buy only one: short-form creators buy CapCut Pro at 700 MAD for a year, which is 700 ÷ 12, about 58 MAD a month. Everyone else buys nothing this month and installs Resolve free. Come back to Adobe when a client hands you a Premiere project or asks for motion graphics.

DaVinci Resolve, free tier. Download it from Blackmagic Design and it is yours: no watermark, no expiry, no nagging. Editing, the colour page, Fusion for compositing and Fairlight for audio mixing are all in it, and Blackmagic gives away the full manual and structured training courses. For a large share of readers, the correct answer on this page costs zero dirhams.

Other free tools that are not compromises:

• OBS Studio for screen recording and live streaming.
• Audacity for quick audio cleanup when you do not want a full mixer.
• HandBrake for compressing a delivery file down to something you can actually send.
• Shotcut or Kdenlive if your machine cannot run Resolve at all.
• GIMP, Krita or Photopea for thumbnails and simple graphics.
• The YouTube Audio Library and Pixabay for music you are allowed to publish.

What to delay: After Effects, because Fusion already sits inside Resolve. Plugin bundles, until a paying job needs one specific effect. Stock footage and stock music subscriptions, until a client is paying for them. And one warning worth its own line: Apple Music at 50 MAD for three months is for listening while you work. It is not a music licence, and a track from it in a client video will get that video muted.

These are the only numbers we can quote.

• CapCut Pro: 700 MAD for one year — 700 ÷ 12, about 58 MAD a month.
• Adobe Creative Cloud, all apps, including Premiere Pro and After Effects: 400 MAD for 4 months. Three terms cover a year, so 400 × 3 = 1,200 MAD, or 100 MAD a month.
• Microsoft 365: 100 MAD for 3 months, so 100 × 4 = 400 MAD a year, for quotes, invoices and client documents.
• Bitdefender Total Security: 399 MAD a year for 5 devices, which is reasonable on the machine holding a client’s only copy of their footage.
• DaVinci Resolve free: 0 MAD. Resolve Studio: bought from Blackmagic, not sold here.

A full paid year of all four comes to 700 + 1,200 + 400 + 399 = 2,699 MAD. A working short-form setup is 700 MAD. A working long-form setup can be nothing at all.

The real expense is not software. It is drives, a machine with a dedicated graphics card, and a second copy of everything. We do not sell hardware and will not quote prices for it.

Upgrade when a job forces it, not when a tutorial suggests it. The signals are specific.

• A client sends a Premiere project, or asks for motion graphics on a deadline: Adobe Creative Cloud, 400 MAD for 4 months.
• You are writing quotes and invoices every week: Microsoft 365, 100 MAD for 3 months.
• You now hold footage a client could never reshoot: Bitdefender Total Security, 399 MAD a year for 5 devices.
• You are delivering above 4K, or you need Resolve’s collaboration and faster encoding: Resolve Studio, bought from Blackmagic directly — we do not sell it.
