Is Boris FX Suite worth it? — who earns the licence back, and who should not buy it

For paid visual-effects work, usually yes. For simple editing, no. Boris FX Suite is a bundle, not a single plug-in. Boris FX’s Suite page lists 11 products: Sapphire and Continuum for effects and finishing, Mocha Pro and Silhouette for tracking, rotoscoping and clean-up, SynthEyes for 3D camera tracking, Optics for photos, Particle Illusion Pro for particles, CrumplePop for audio repair, and three audio workstations — Sequoia, Samplitude and Music Studio — that run on Windows only.

The value sits in a narrow set of jobs: replacing a phone screen that moves through the shot, removing a logo from a wall the camera pans past, cutting a dancer out of the background frame by frame, fixing a shaky handheld shot, placing a 3D title into a moving camera shot. If jobs like these arrive every month, the Suite is a working tool. If they arrive once a year, a free trial or a free tool is the smarter answer.

Do not decide on the size of the effects count. Sapphire’s page states more than 270 effects and transitions and Continuum’s more than 300 effects, but nobody is paid for a number. Decide on the shots you are asked to deliver, and on whether your current software handles them cleanly.

The people who earn the licence back are the ones whose invoices include shots that go beyond cutting. Match your own work against this table. The tool column follows what Boris FX lists for each product; the job column is the kind of shot that tool exists for.

Read the pattern. Mocha Pro, Silhouette and SynthEyes are the tools that justify the Suite for compositing work: they handle shots that are slow and fragile to do by hand, keyframe by keyframe. Boris FX aims Sapphire at editors, VFX artists, colourists and motion designers, and Continuum at editors and content creators, and both work inside the editing and compositing applications those people already use. CrumplePop and Optics are useful extras, but they are rarely the reason to buy the whole bundle.

In Morocco, the profiles that fit are easy to name: motion designers and compositors at agencies in Casablanca and Rabat who deliver advertising, freelance editors who take on music videos and brand films, colourists and finishing editors, and YouTubers who produce stylised content rather than talking heads. For them, one tracked insert or one clean removal that holds up on the client’s screen is the point of the licence.

Check your host before you get attached to a tool. Boris FX’s Suite page lists hosts across the bundle including After Effects, Premiere Pro, Avid Media Composer, DaVinci Resolve, Nuke, Flame, VEGAS Pro, Final Cut Pro and Photoshop, plus standalone applications, but support varies by product. Much of what people want from Boris FX Suite may already be on their machine. Check these before you pay anyone, including us.

After Effects users. Mocha AE is bundled free with After Effects and gives you planar tracking with roto and masking; Adobe describes it as GPU-accelerated, with Multi-Frame Rendering support. After Effects also has its own point Tracker with corner pinning, the 3D Camera Tracker, Warp Stabilizer, Next-Gen Roto Brush, Content-Aware Fill for removing unwanted objects, and a mask tracker whose Perspective method solves corner-pin transformations. For an occasional screen replacement on a flat surface, that toolset can be enough. Mocha Pro becomes necessary when you need what Boris FX lists as Pro-only — the Remove, Insert, Stabilization and Lens modules, the 3D Camera Solver, PowerMesh — or Mocha inside Premiere Pro. Premiere Pro editors. Premiere tracks masks by position, scale and rotation, or by perspective, and Adobe lists uses such as blurring faces and attaching text or graphics to moving objects. For more advanced tracking, Adobe itself suggests sending the sequence to After Effects through Dynamic Link. Running Mocha inside Premiere Pro requires Mocha Pro, not Mocha AE.

DaVinci Resolve users. Blackmagic’s Fusion page describes a 2D tracker, a planar tracker for signs and screens with built-in corner pinning, and a 3D camera tracker, and the Color page tracker makes Power Windows follow moving objects. Blackmagic lists some tools as Studio-only, including Magic Mask and object removal, and its pages do not make clear which of these trackers the free version includes. Open your copy and test the tracker you need on your own footage before you pay for a plug-in.

3D artists and anyone on a zero budget. Blender is free software that can be used for any purpose, including commercial work. Its motion tracker does 2D tracking, camera and object tracking and plane tracks, tracks can drive masks for rotoscoping, and it has 2D stabilisation. The limits are real — lens distortion, for example, has to be calibrated by hand or with outside tools — but for tracking a camera into a Blender scene it costs nothing. Natron, another free option people mention, is not one to build a client workflow on: according to the project’s own release page, its last stable release, 2.5.0, dates from November 2022, and the project says it is looking for maintainers.

People who cut simple edits. Wedding and event films, interviews, vlogs, social clips with captions and music: if your edits stop at cuts, titles and a grade, none of that needs a planar tracker or a 3D camera solver. Put the money into storage or a better microphone instead.

Hobbyists who want particles. Boris FX lets the standalone Particle Illusion run free for non-commercial and personal use. A licence is needed once the work is commercial, or for background import.

After Effects artists who mainly want looks and particles. If your work is particles, glows and colour inside After Effects rather than tracking and clean-up, compare the Suite with Maxon’s Red Giant first. 999 MAD for a 1-year licence works out at about 83 MAD a month — 999 divided by 12. The useful comparison is not with a monthly figure but with one job. Take the fee for a single commercial, music video or brand film you delivered last year, and ask whether it contained a shot your current tools handled badly: a screen insert that drifted, a logo you could not remove cleanly, roto you gave up on and cropped around. If a single job like that pays more than 999 MAD, one job covers the year. If you cannot name such a shot, the arithmetic does not matter — you do not need the Suite yet.

Time counts too. A track you do not have to rescue by hand is an evening back, and an evening back is worth more to a freelancer in Agadir or Fès than a long feature list. But be honest about the learning curve: Mocha Pro, Silhouette and SynthEyes are specialist applications, and the first projects with them can be slower, not faster.

What 999 MAD does not buy matters just as much. It does not include the host application: you still need your own After Effects, Premiere Pro, DaVinci Resolve, Avid Media Composer, Nuke or other supported host, or you work in the standalone applications. It does not include a tax invoice. And your computer has to keep up — Silhouette’s requirements ask for 4 GB of graphics memory or more, and 8 GB for its machine-learning nodes, while SynthEyes asks for at least 8 GB of RAM. Sometimes the real comparison is not the Suite against a free tool, but the Suite against a cracked copy passed around in a group chat.

A cracked plug-in is not a free licence. It is software from a source you cannot check, typically installed with a patched installer, sometimes with a request to switch off your antivirus. It then loads inside the host application you rely on for every client project, so when it misbehaves it can take the host down with it, mid-edit and close to a deadline. And when something breaks, there is nobody to ask.

Boris FX documents what some of its tools do when they are unlicensed or when a trial ends. Unlicensed Continuum plug-ins show a red X watermark. Sapphire, once its 30-day trial is over, renders black frames until a subscription or licence is bought. Mocha Pro, after its 14-day trial, reverts to a Learning Edition whose renders are watermarked and whose exports are limited to 10 frames. None of that is a problem on a trial you chose. All of it is a problem on a client’s master.

The risk lands on you, not on whoever shared the crack: a render that fails on delivery day, or client footage kept on a computer running software from a source nobody can vouch for. It is the price of running paid work on software you can install, activate and ask questions about.

Answer these honestly, in order. If an answer is no, stop there: the next step is a trial or a free tool, not a payment.

1. Which shot needs it? Name a job from the last three months, or one you are quoting now, that needs tracking, roto, clean-up, a 3D camera solve or finishing effects you do not have. If you cannot name one, you are not buying for work yet.
2. Does a tool you already have do it? Try Mocha AE and the built-in trackers in After Effects, the trackers in DaVinci Resolve, or Blender’s motion tracker on that exact shot first.
3. Does it run in your host and on your computer? Check the host list for the specific tool — Mocha Pro, Sapphire, Continuum and Silhouette each have their own — and the requirements for your operating system and graphics card. Sequoia, Samplitude and Music Studio are Windows only, and Continuum does not support Linux.
4. Have you tried it on your own footage? Boris FX offers free trials of every Suite product through the Boris FX Hub, with no payment details needed. Mocha Pro and Silhouette run fully for 14 days, Optics without restriction for 14 days, and Sapphire for 30 days with a watermark. Use the trial on the shot from question one, not on a tutorial clip.
5. Do the terms of this offer suit you? One year, renewed manually on WhatsApp. No tax invoice. An independent seller, not Boris FX, and purchases at your own risk. Boris FX’s documentation says a standard node-locked licence is active on one computer at a time and is deactivated before it is moved; ask on WhatsApp how activation works for your order. If you need a tax invoice, this is not the right purchase.

Boris FX Suite is worth it for people who are paid to deliver shots, not just edits. If you are a compositor, a motion designer, a finishing editor or a colourist whose work regularly includes tracked inserts, removals, rotoscoping, 3D camera tracks or finishing effects, the Suite bundles Mocha Pro, Silhouette, SynthEyes, Sapphire and Continuum together, and 999 MAD a year can be recovered by a single job that needs them.

It is not worth it if your edits stop at cuts, titles, music and a grade, if Mocha AE in After Effects or the trackers in DaVinci Resolve already handle your occasional tracking, if you only want particles for personal projects, or if your business needs a tax invoice. In those cases, keep your money and use what you have.

If you sit in between — one tracking job a quarter, say — run the free trials on real footage when that job arrives, and decide then.
