Windows 11 Pro vs Windows 11 Home — who actually needs Pro

Windows 11 Pro and Home are the same operating system. The difference comes down to four features — BitLocker, Remote Desktop hosting, Hyper-V and domain join — and this page is about who genuinely needs them and who is paying for a checklist.

What each edition actually is — the same Windows, two feature lists

Windows 11 Home and Windows 11 Pro are the same operating system. Same kernel, same interface, same Microsoft Defender, same monthly security updates, same speed on the same hardware. Pro is not a faster Windows, and out of the box it is not a safer one either. It is Home plus a set of tools built for people who manage computers rather than only use them.

Four features carry almost the whole argument, and they are the four this page is about:

  • BitLocker: full-drive encryption that you control, including removable drives.
  • Remote Desktop hosting: letting another machine connect in to this one.
  • Hyper-V: running full virtual machines inside Windows.
  • Domain or Entra ID join: attaching the PC to a company network.

Everything else on the comparison tables — Group Policy, Windows Sandbox, kiosk mode, a far higher memory ceiling, support for a second processor — matters to an even narrower group. And nearly every laptop sold in Morocco arrives with Home already installed, so Home is the default you are comparing against, not a blank machine. The real question is not which edition is better in the abstract. It is whether those four lines describe something you actually do.

Where Windows 11 Pro wins — encryption, remote access, virtual machines

BitLocker is the strongest reason to pay. It encrypts the whole drive, so a stolen laptop is a lost laptop rather than a leak of client files. On Pro you control the details: which drives are encrypted, USB sticks through BitLocker To Go, where recovery keys are kept, and settings enforced through policy. Home offers at most an automatic device encryption, on hardware that supports it and only with a Microsoft account signed in. It either switches on quietly or is unavailable, with none of those controls.

Remote Desktop is the difference between calling and being called. Home can connect out to another PC; only Pro can answer an incoming connection. If the machine you need to reach — the office desktop, the workstation doing the rendering — runs Home, Windows itself will not pick up.

Hyper-V runs full virtual machines: a second Windows for testing, a Linux server, an old program that refuses to start on a modern system. Windows Sandbox, built on the same foundation, opens a disposable desktop that vanishes when you close it, which is the safest way to open a file you do not trust. Neither exists on Home. Domain join is the last one: an office running Active Directory, or a company Entra ID tenant, will only accept Pro. That is a requirement, not a preference.

Where Windows 11 Home wins — more often than sellers admit

Home wins first on money you do not spend. It is already on the laptop, and if none of those four features describes your week, Pro is a second transaction that changes nothing you will ever notice.

It also wins on the ways you cannot break it. Every Pro feature is a setting that can be misconfigured. BitLocker with a recovery key nobody saved is one of the most reliable ways to lose data permanently: a firmware update or a motherboard repair can push the machine into recovery, and without that key the drive is mathematically gone. The Group Policy editor is the other classic — a few changed policies and a PC behaves strangely for months.

Performance is identical. Games, Photoshop, Premiere, Office and browsers behave the same on both, and turning Hyper-V on tends to cost a little speed rather than add any. For one person, the free alternatives are reasonable: VeraCrypt for encrypted containers, third-party remote tools that also work behind a router you do not control, VirtualBox or WSL for a test machine.

Neither edition protects you from malware you install yourself. Bitdefender Total Security, 399 MAD a year for five devices, covers that separate risk. It does not replace BitLocker, and BitLocker does not replace it.

What Pro costs in Morocco — and what that changes

Moving from Home to Pro does not mean reinstalling. It is a licence change: Settings, System, Activation, change product key, and the machine comes back as Pro with your files and programs untouched. Going the other way, from Pro down to Home, does need a clean install — worth knowing before you buy a machine you do not need.

ROSH™ Company Labs sells genuine Windows licences at Moroccan prices, quoted in dirham and settled on WhatsApp, with no international credit card required. The Pro licence is priced on request, because the right answer depends on the machine: some PCs already hold a digital licence that can be reclaimed for nothing, and establishing that before money moves is the point of the conversation.

Two candid notes. ROSH™ Company Labs is independent, not a partner, affiliate or authorised reseller of Microsoft or any other vendor, and it is not a formally registered company: no tax invoice is issued. If your accountant needs a facture for the licence, buy it somewhere that can give you one — that is a real constraint and no discount cancels it. Second, compare honestly against what Pro replaces. If Pro removes a monthly subscription you pay in euros for remote access, the arithmetic is easy. If it replaces nothing, it is a feature list you paid for.

How to choose — a straight answer by reader type

Stay on Home if you are a student, a gamer, or a household using the PC for browsing, Office, streaming and photos. Pro adds nothing to any of that. Stay on Home too if the machine never leaves a room you lock and nobody else has physical access to it.

Buy Pro if one of these is true:

  • You carry client work on a laptop that leaves the house — BitLocker alone justifies it.
  • You need to reach your own PC from somewhere else regularly, not once a year.
  • You test software, run virtual machines, or open files you do not trust.
  • Your employer or your office network requires a domain or Entra ID join.
  • You run a shop or reception PC that should only ever open one application.

The borderline case is the freelancer with one laptop that never travels. There, Home plus real backups plus some discipline about who touches the machine is a defensible choice, and Pro is a comfort rather than a fix. If you are unsure which side of that line you are on, describe the machine and how you work on WhatsApp before spending anything. Sometimes the honest answer is to keep Home, and that costs you nothing.

Common questions about Pro and Home

Do I really need Windows 11 Pro?

Probably not, unless one of four things is true: you carry client files on a laptop that leaves the house, you need to connect to your own PC from elsewhere, you run virtual machines or open files you do not trust, or your office requires a domain join. If none of those describe you, Home does everything you will actually notice, and the money is better spent elsewhere.

Can I upgrade from Home to Pro without reinstalling Windows?

Yes. Open Settings, go to System, then Activation, choose to change the product key, and enter a Pro key. Windows switches edition in place: your files, programs and settings stay where they are, and the machine comes back as Pro. The reverse is harder — moving a Pro installation down to Home needs a clean install, which is worth knowing before you buy hardware.

Does Windows 11 Home have BitLocker?

Not in the form Pro has. On supported hardware, and with a Microsoft account signed in, Home can turn on automatic device encryption, and the recovery key is stored in that account. What Home does not give you is control: no BitLocker To Go for USB drives, no policy management, no choice about how and where keys are kept. Save the recovery key either way.

Can I use Remote Desktop on Windows 11 Home?

In one direction only. Home can act as the client and connect out to another computer, but it cannot host an incoming Remote Desktop session. If the machine you need to reach runs Home, the options are a third-party remote tool or a Pro licence on that machine. The edition that matters is the one on the PC being connected to, not the one you connect from.

Is Windows 11 Pro faster, or better for gaming?

No. The two editions share the same kernel, the same graphics stack and the same scheduler, so frame rates and application speed are identical on identical hardware. If anything, turning on Hyper-V or virtualisation-based security can cost a few frames in some games. Nobody should buy Pro expecting more speed; buy it for the features or not at all.

How much is Windows 11 Pro at ROSH™ Company Labs, and is ROSH™ Company Labs a Microsoft partner?

ROSH™ Company Labs is independent: not a partner, affiliate or authorised reseller of Microsoft or any other vendor. Windows licences are sold at Moroccan prices in dirham and ordered on WhatsApp, with no international card needed. The Pro price is given on request, because some PCs already hold a digital licence that can be reclaimed at no cost, and that is worth checking before you pay.
