AutoCAD vs 3ds Max — drafting or rendering, not the same job

Both are Autodesk programs, and they are not alternatives to each other. One produces drawings that get built from, the other produces images that get approved — and the quickest way to waste money is to buy the wrong half of that sentence.

What each program actually does — and where the overlap misleads

AutoCAD is a drafting and documentation program. You work with coordinates, layers, blocks and external references, and what leaves the office is a set of sheets at a fixed scale — plans, sections, details, a permit file — written in native DWG, the format your client and the bureau d’études open with no conversion step.

3ds Max is a modelling, animation and rendering program. You build geometry with the modifier stack, unwrap UVs, assign PBR materials, light the scene and render it. The Arnold renderer ships with it. What leaves the office is an image, a turntable or an animation — not a document anyone builds from.

The overlap is just large enough to confuse people. AutoCAD does have 3D solids, surfaces and meshes and a basic renderer. 3ds Max does read DWG and can link a Revit model. But neither overlap is the other program’s job: an AutoCAD render is not what an archviz client signs off, and 3ds Max has no sheet layouts, no dimension standards and no plotting to scale.

The short version. One makes drawings that get built. The other makes pictures that get approved. Offices doing both usually run both, and pass geometry from one to the other.

Where AutoCAD is the right tool — documents, scale and DWG

AutoCAD wins wherever the deliverable is a document rather than a picture. Sheet layouts and title blocks, dimension styles, annotation scales, plotting to a fixed scale, Sheet Set Manager across a whole permit file — 3ds Max has no equivalent for any of it, because that was never its job.

It also wins on exchange. In Morocco, DWG is the working currency between architects, bureaux d’études, contractors and control offices. A native DWG opens on the other side at the right scale with xrefs resolved, instead of costing someone an afternoon repairing geometry that survived a conversion badly.

The revision tools are the underrated part: DWG Compare between two indices of a plan, Count for blocks, Trace so a colleague can mark up without touching your geometry, and markup import for scanned or PDF corrections. On a file that goes through four rounds of review, that is where the hours come back.

  • Runs on Windows and macOS, plus web and mobile apps for viewing and light edits on site.
  • Windows adds the specialised toolsets — Architecture, Mechanical, Electrical, MEP, Plant 3D, Map 3D, Raster Design.
  • Modest hardware. A normal work laptop drafts comfortably.

Where 3ds Max is the right tool — images, motion and materials

3ds Max wins the moment the deliverable is an image. Polygon, spline and NURBS modelling with the modifier stack, Smart Extrude and Chamfer, retopology, UV unwrapping, PBR materials, physical lighting and the bundled Arnold renderer — that whole chain exists so a scene can look photographed rather than drawn.

It also handles everything that moves: keyframe and procedural animation, rigging and skinning, MassFX dynamics, particle systems, camera work for a walkthrough or a turntable. It exports rigged, animated assets to Unreal Engine or Unity through FBX and USD, which is why game and motion teams keep it in the pipeline.

Two honest limits. It is Windows only — 64-bit Windows 10 or 11 — and running it on a Mac through a virtual machine costs performance exactly where heavy scenes need it. It is also demanding: a serious archviz scene wants a strong CPU or GPU and plenty of RAM, a real cost stacked on top of the licence.

Where something else may be better. If you only need a fast real-time walkthrough from a SketchUp or Revit model, Lumion or Twinmotion gets you there sooner. And if you are learning and paying for nothing, Blender is free, open source and genuinely capable.

What they cost in Morocco — and what that changes

Neither is listed at a fixed number by ROSH™ Company Labs, and this page will not invent one. Autodesk sells both as subscriptions — monthly, annual and multi-year — priced in dollars or euros, and those figures move with promotions and exchange rates. So it is contact for pricing, in dirham, for the term and seat count you describe.

What changes locally is not only the number. Autodesk’s own store assumes an international card, and between the card fee and the exchange spread the real dirham cost lands above the sticker. A local quote paid by a local method removes that step, which is most of the reason Moroccan buyers ask for one.

Three things worth raising in your first message, because they change the answer more than the choice of program does:

  • Term. If you render twice a year, a short 3ds Max subscription costs far less than a year you do not use.
  • AutoCAD LT, if you draft in 2D and never touch 3D or the toolsets — a smaller licence for a smaller need.
  • An Autodesk collection, if you genuinely need both. Bundled is usually cheaper than two separate subscriptions.

One inconvenient fact for business buyers. ROSH™ Company Labs is an independent digital brand, not a registered company, and issues no tax invoice. If your accountant requires a facture, buy direct from Autodesk or from one of its authorised resellers — ROSH™ Company Labs is not one, and is not affiliated with Autodesk.

How to choose — by the work you are actually paid for

Architecture, civil, structural or MEP office. AutoCAD, and it is not close. Your invoice is attached to drawings that have to hold up under review. 3ds Max comes later, the day a client is paying for images.

Freelance visualiser or interior designer selling renders. 3ds Max. You will still receive DWG plans from clients, but the free viewers and the AutoCAD web app cover reading and printing without a full licence.

A small practice doing both. Ask about an Autodesk collection rather than two subscriptions, or pair AutoCAD with Blender and check whether the free renderer is enough before paying for a second seat. It often is, at least for a while.

Game, product or motion work. 3ds Max for the FBX and USD pipeline into Unreal or Unity; Blender if budget is the binding constraint and you are willing to learn a different interface.

Student or teacher. Buy neither. Autodesk grants free educational access to both for verified students and teachers. That route is entirely legitimate and worth exhausting before you spend anything.

If you are still unsure, describe the last three jobs you were paid for. The answer is usually in what you delivered, not in what you would like to learn.

Questions our clients ask

Can 3ds Max replace AutoCAD?

No. 3ds Max models and renders; it has no sheet layouts, no dimension standards and no plotting to a fixed scale, so you cannot issue a permit set or a shop drawing from it. It does read DWG and can link a Revit model, which is useful for building a scene on top of an existing plan — but the drawing itself is still produced and revised somewhere else.

Can AutoCAD replace 3ds Max for rendering?

For a quick massing view or a clean line-and-shadow image, often yes: AutoCAD has 3D solids, surfaces, meshes and a basic renderer. For a photoreal interior with physical lighting, real materials and an image a client signs off on, no. That is precisely what Arnold, the material system and the lighting tools in 3ds Max exist for.

Do files move between the two?

Yes, mainly in one direction. 3ds Max imports DWG and links Revit models, so your plan becomes the base of the scene. Going back the other way is rarely useful, because a rendered image is not a drawing. One practical tip: clean your layers and purge unused blocks before importing, or a messy DWG becomes a messy scene with thousands of objects.

Which one should I learn first?

Whichever one your invoice rests on. In Moroccan construction and design practice that is almost always AutoCAD: the deliverable is a drawing and DWG is the shared language. Learn 3ds Max the day someone pays you for images rather than for plans. Learning both at once usually means being slow at both when the first tight deadline arrives.

Will they run on my machine?

3ds Max is Windows only, 64-bit Windows 10 or 11, and a serious scene wants a strong CPU or GPU and plenty of RAM; running it on a Mac through a virtual machine works but loses performance exactly where you need it. AutoCAD runs on Windows and macOS, though the Mac version does not include the specialised toolsets. Drafting itself is comfortable on a normal work laptop.

How do I get a price for either one?

Both are contact for pricing. Message ROSH™ Company Labs on WhatsApp with the program, the term you want and the number of workstations, and a quote comes back in dirham, usually the same working day. You pay with a local method and activation follows. Note that no tax invoice is issued, and ROSH™ Company Labs is independent — not an Autodesk partner or authorised reseller.
