Sapphire vs Continuum — which Boris FX plug-in set fits your work

Both products are plug-ins. Neither opens on its own: each adds effects and transitions to a host application you already own, such as Premiere Pro or DaVinci Resolve, and neither includes that host. They also overlap more than their names suggest. Each has blurs, glows, film looks, transitions, a preset browser and Mocha planar tracking built in. So the useful question is not which one is bigger, but which one is organised around the work you actually deliver.

• Choose Sapphire if the job is the look: lens flares, glows, defocus, film looks, film burns and stylised transitions for music videos, promos and title sequences. Also if you want Sapphire's node-based Builder, or you work in Flame, in Photoshop or on Linux.
• Choose Continuum if the job is the edit: 2D and 3D titles, green-screen keying, noisy or soft footage, isolating faces and masking number plates, particles and effects that follow the music. Also if you edit in Final Cut Pro or Apple Motion, where Sapphire is not listed.
• Get both if your work covers both sides, which is common for freelancers. Boris FX Suite includes Sapphire and Continuum, so with the Suite the choice disappears.

A summary of what Boris FX's own pages list for each collection. The sections below give the detail and the exceptions.

Sapphire is what Boris FX calls a GPU-accelerated collection of visual effects and transitions plug-ins. Its product page counts more than 270 effects and transitions and more than 3,000 presets, grouped as Light & Flares, Blur & Distort, Render & Composite, Stylize, and Transition & Time. Boris FX dates Sapphire back to 1996 and names editors, VFX artists, colourists and motion designers as the people it is made for. Integrated Mocha planar tracking and masking is part of the package, and the effects are GPU-accelerated on NVIDIA, AMD and Apple silicon.

Continuum is Boris FX's collection of effects, transitions and workflow tools for editors and content creators. The product page lists 300+ effects and 5,000+ presets, then leans on practical jobs: machine-learning tools such as DeNoise ML and UpRes ML, film stocks, 3D particles from Particle Illusion and 2D or 3D titles from Title Studio. Boris FX also says Mocha tracking is built into every Continuum effect.

Treat those counts as a rough size, not a score. Both collections are large enough that the deciding factor is which tools you will actually open. Sapphire's page also cites a 2019 Primetime Engineering Emmy.

Open your host's effects list and the two collections look different before you apply anything, because Boris FX organises them differently.

Sapphire uses categories. In Adobe hosts, Boris FX's documentation files every Sapphire effect in one of ten submenus: Sapphire Adjust, Blur+Sharpen, Builder, Composite, Distort, Lighting, Render, Stylize, Time and Transitions. S_Glow and S_LensFlare sit in Lighting, S_FilmEffect in Stylize, S_Shake in Distort, and the two Builder effects, S_Effect and S_Transition, in Builder. Every effect name starts with S_, which makes Sapphire quick to find with the search field of an effects panel.

Continuum uses units. Its 2026 effects list sorts the filters into 20 categories whose names start with BCC: 3D Objects, Art Looks, Blur, Color and Tone, Film Style, Grads and Tints, Image Restoration, Key and Blend, Lens, Lights, Match Move, Optical Diffusion, Particles, Perspective, Stylize, Textures, Time, Transitions, VR and Warp. Boris FX also presents these groups as Continuum Units, next to Premium Filters that include Particle Illusion, Title Studio, Primatte Studio and Beauty Studio. The filters come in two generations, classic BCC effects and newer BCC+ effects, and the two open different preset windows, as the next section explains.

Going by the names alone, Sapphire's groups describe kinds of effect, while many of Continuum's describe jobs, such as Image Restoration, Key and Blend or Match Move. If you have the whole of Continuum, the units are simply a way to find things: Boris FX Suite lists Continuum itself among its products, and ROSH™ Company Labs sells the Suite, not individual units.

Lists of hundreds of effects hide the handful of tools people actually buy each collection for. These are the ones Boris FX puts forward, with what they do.

Sapphire

• S_LensFlare and Flare Designer. Boris FX calls S_LensFlare Sapphire's most popular effect, and Flare Designer is its tool for designing custom lens flares. The 2026.5 release added new Pro Lens Flares and new offset modes in Flare Designer.
• Effect and Transition Builder. A node-based tool that combines Sapphire effects into a single effect or transition. You apply S_Effect or S_Transition, click Edit Effect, and publish the parameters you want to keep adjusting back in the host.
• Light and glow. S_Glow sits in the Lighting group next to S_LensFlare, and the 2026.5 release reworked S_Glare.
• New in 2026.5. S_AdvancedDefocus and S_TextureRidges, alongside updates to the Builder.
• Film looks. S_FilmEffect, in the Stylize group, plus S_FilmBurn, added in Sapphire 2026 as both an effect and a transition.
• Transitions. The Transitions group includes S_DissolveGlow and S_SwishPan, and S_MochaWhip, a 2026 transition that uses Mocha's AI tools to cut a subject out of one shot and whip it into the next.

Continuum

• Title Studio. Builds 2D and 3D vector titles without leaving your editor.
• Primatte Studio. Boris FX's green-screen keying tool.
• Particle Illusion. The 3D particle generator that comes inside Continuum. The 2026.5 release added parameter linking and colour mapping.
• Machine-learning repair. DeNoise ML, UpRes ML, Frame Fixer ML, Motion Blur ML, Retimer ML and Deinterlace ML, new in 2026.5, plus Face ML and License Plate ML for isolating faces and masking number plates.
• Beat Reactor. Drives an effect's animation from an audio track, so the effect moves with the music. Outside After Effects it is built into the effects that support it.
• Looks and beauty. Film Stocks and the Cinematographer Toolkit for film emulation, and Beauty Studio for skin work.

Presets work differently too. Every Sapphire effect has Load Preset and Save Preset buttons that open a browser with Boris FX's presets and your own, filtered by tags and previewed on your footage. Continuum's classic BCC effects open the FX Browser, which previews presets over moving video before you apply one. The newer BCC+ filters use the FX Editor, where you can also adjust settings; in 2026.5 it gained a built-in Pixel Chooser for masking and a colour management panel.

Both collections include a lighter version of Mocha, Boris FX's planar tracker, for masking and planar-based parameter tracking. That lets an effect follow a moving surface, or stay inside a moving shape, without keyframing it by hand. The two put it in different places.

• In Sapphire, most effects carry Mocha as a mask. You click Edit Mocha, draw X-spline or Bézier shapes, track them, then save and exit, because Boris FX warns that unsaved Mocha work is lost. Sapphire 2025.5 added two machine-learning tools inside that Mocha, Object Brush ML and Matte Assist ML. Boris FX's documentation says Sapphire's transition effects do not carry the Mocha mask; S_MochaWhip, added in 2026, is the transition built around Mocha.
• In Continuum, most BCC filters include the Pixel Chooser, with integrated Mocha planar mask tracking behind its Launch Mocha button. Continuum also has the BCC Mocha Motion Tracker, which uses Mocha to drive parameters such as the position of a light or a particle emitter.

What neither gives you is the full Mocha Pro. The Remove, Insert, Stabilize and Lens modules, PowerMesh and the 3D Camera Solver belong to Mocha Pro, a separate product that also comes in Boris FX Suite. This is where the choice is sometimes made for you. From Boris FX's host lists and specification pages:

Three rows settle it for many people. If you edit in Final Cut Pro or Apple Motion, Continuum is the one that runs there, and Boris FX's Continuum page adds that those hosts need macOS 13.4 or later. If you design stills in Photoshop or finish in Flame, Sapphire is the one listed. And on Linux, Boris FX's trial page lists Sapphire as supported and Continuum as Windows and macOS only.

For operating systems, Continuum 2026.5's specifications list Windows 11, and macOS 12 to 15 plus macOS 26, for current Premiere and After Effects versions, while Sapphire's pages list macOS, Windows and Linux. Host and system versions change with every release, so check the current specifications on borisfx.com against the exact version of your editing app before you rely on either. Sapphire uses the graphics card through NVIDIA CUDA or AMD HIP on Windows, Metal on macOS and NVIDIA CUDA on Linux. GPU acceleration is on by default, and an effect that cannot render on the GPU falls back to the CPU by itself. Boris FX's GPU guide adds two useful points: many CUDA cards it does not test internally may still perform well, and CPU rendering is slower but gives identical output. Continuum accelerates the filters that use OpenCL, and its BCC Preferences panel has an Enable OpenCL switch. In Premiere and After Effects you open those preferences with the Preferences button in the BCC banner at the top of each effect. Boris FX notes that these preferences are not saved in project files, so a project moved to another computer can render differently if the settings differ. Continuum 2026.5 also unloads machine-learning models from the graphics card when they sit unused, to free memory. Check Continuum's current specifications for graphics card requirements, and test the trial on your own machine.

Either way, and especially on a laptop, test the exact effects you plan to use, at the resolution you deliver, before a client deadline depends on them.

Both have free trials through the Boris FX Hub, Boris FX's free app for installing, licensing and trialling its products. Boris FX's trial page says no payment details are needed and that trials do not renew or charge you. The limits are not the same, and one point is documented inconsistently:

• Sapphire: every feature works, but the output carries a red X and is limited to HD. The trial page gives it 30 days, and Boris FX's support article adds that after 30 days an unlicensed Sapphire renders black frames.
• Continuum: a fully functional trial whose output also carries a red X. Here the pages differ: the trial page gives Continuum 30 days, while the support article on trial licences describes the watermarked trial without giving a length. Plan your tests inside 30 days to be safe.

The red X is the trial doing its job, not a fault. Use the trial to answer the one question that matters: which effects you actually reach for on your own footage, in your own host. Boris FX's own comparison, published in 2023, recommends Sapphire for special effects, motion graphics and building custom effects and transitions, and Continuum for image restoration, keying, rotoscoping, motion graphics and colour work. That matches what the tools themselves show. By the kind of work you deliver:

• Music videos, promos and social campaigns in Casablanca or Rabat, where the look sells the video: Sapphire, for flares, glows, film burns and stylised transitions.
• Documentaries, interviews and corporate films: Continuum, for titles, noise reduction, upscaling and masking faces or number plates.
• Weddings and events in Marrakech or Agadir: Continuum for titles and repairs, Sapphire if your style depends on glows, flares and soft defocus.
• Green-screen work: Continuum, for Primatte Studio.
• Signature effects and transitions of your own: Sapphire, for the Builder.
• Edits cut to music: Continuum, whose Beat Reactor animates effects from the soundtrack.
• Final Cut Pro or Motion: Continuum. Flame, Photoshop or Linux: Sapphire.
• A small studio in Tangier or Fès that does all of the above: both, which is what Boris FX Suite gives you.

And if your edits rarely go beyond cuts, simple titles and basic colour, you may not need either yet. Premiere and other editors come with their own effects, and a plug-in collection earns its place when paid work asks for something those built-in tools cannot do.

Boris FX sells Sapphire and Continuum separately, and it also bundles them. Its Suite page lists 11 products: Sapphire and Continuum, plus Mocha Pro, Silhouette, SynthEyes, Optics, Particle Illusion Pro, CrumplePop and three Windows-only audio workstations, Sequoia, Samplitude and Music Studio.
