Microsoft 365 vs Google Workspace — offline Office depth against browser-first collaboration

The two names get used as if they were interchangeable. They are not, and the difference is architectural rather than cosmetic.

Microsoft 365 is a subscription to software that installs on your computer. Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook run locally, keep your files on the disk in front of you, and sync a copy to OneDrive when there is a connection. The cloud is an addition to the applications; it is not the place they live.

Google Workspace is the opposite arrangement. Docs, Sheets, Slides, Gmail, Drive, Calendar and Meet live in the browser, on Google servers, attached to a domain name you own. There is nothing to install and nothing to back up. It is a business subscription billed per person per month; the free consumer versions of Docs and Sheets are the same editors without mail on your domain, without the admin console and without support.

One is a toolbox you own a copy of. The other is a workspace you log into. Almost every difference below comes out of that single fact.

Microsoft 365 wins wherever the work is heavy, offline, or handed over as a file.

• It works with no internet. Not partially, not after enabling a special mode in advance — the applications are on your disk. A dead connection, a trip, a site visit, a bad ADSL day: the work continues.
• Excel is deeper than Sheets, and not by a little. Pivot tables, Power Query, Power Pivot, Solver, VBA macros and the add-in ecosystem accountants live inside. Large workbooks stay responsive because the calculation runs on your own processor, not on a server somewhere else.
• Files arrive as files. In Morocco, bank statements, tender documents, accountant templates and client decks circulate as xlsx, docx and pptx. Opening them in Excel or Word means the formatting, the macros and the conditional formulas behave the way the sender built them.
• Desktop PowerPoint and Outlook. Fonts, animation, and mail archived locally, so a slow line does not cost you a working day.

The honest caveat: the deepest data tools, Power Query and Power Pivot in their full form, are Windows features. On a Mac you get most of Excel, not all of it. If your work rests on those two, that matters more than any price difference.

Google Workspace wins wherever more than one person touches the same thing.

• Genuine simultaneous editing. Two or five people inside one sheet, cursors visible, and no budget-final-v3-FINAL.xlsx circulating on WhatsApp. Version history is automatic and reaches a long way back, which quietly solves most of what people keep backups for.
• Permissions instead of copies. You share a link and decide who may view, comment or edit. When a collaborator leaves, you remove the access and the document stays with you. A file sitting on somebody’s laptop leaves with the laptop.
• Nothing to install. Any borrowed computer, any phone, any cybercafé, and the same work is in front of you. Bringing a new person in is an account, not an afternoon of setup.
• Mail on your own domain, with Google’s spam filtering and search behind it. For a lot of small Moroccan businesses this is the actual reason to buy Workspace; the documents come along with it.

A fair concession: Sheets is a competent spreadsheet. Invoicing, stock lists and budgets never come near its ceiling, and it collaborates better than Excel does. The depth of Excel only counts if you actually reach for it.

Retail pricing for both products is set in foreign currency and assumes an international card. That is where most Moroccan buyers stop reading.

Microsoft 365 through ROSH™ Company Labs costs 100 MAD for 3 months — a genuine licence, activated on your own account, paid in dirhams, ordered over WhatsApp. It is the consumer subscription: the installed apps and personal cloud storage on your account, not a per-seat business plan with mail on your domain. The recommendation, without hedging, by who you are.

• Student, freelancer, or anyone working mostly alone — Microsoft 365. You will be handed docx and xlsx files, they need to open correctly, and at 100 MAD for 3 months the decision costs almost nothing to reverse.
• Accountant, financial analyst, engineer, anyone whose day is spent inside a spreadsheet — Microsoft 365, on Windows. Not a close call.
• A team of three or more editing the same documents daily — Google Workspace, bought from Google. The collaboration is worth more than the offline apps, and the admin console is worth more than both.
• A small business whose main need is professional mail on its own domain — Google Workspace is the straightforward answer. Microsoft’s equivalent is a Business plan, also billed per user, so compare those two against each other rather than against the consumer subscription.
• Unreliable connection, or work in the field — Microsoft 365, without hesitation.

And the answer nobody sells you: plenty of people run both. Workspace for mail and shared drafts, Microsoft 365 for the spreadsheet and the final document that has to look right when it leaves. At 100 MAD for 3 months, adding Microsoft 365 on top of an existing Google setup is a cheap way to close the one gap Workspace leaves.
