How to activate AutoCAD — from Autodesk account to first drawing

The answer first: on a current AutoCAD subscription there is no serial number to type. Activation is a sign-in. You install the software, sign in with the Autodesk account the licence is assigned to, and AutoCAD checks the entitlement itself. If anyone hands you a keygen or a patched file, that is not what you are buying here.

Have this ready before you begin:

• An Autodesk account on an email address you own, and whose password you can reset yourself.
• That exact address, written out to ROSH™ Company Labs on WhatsApp. The licence is assigned to one named user, so a single typo sends it somewhere else.
• A 64-bit Windows 10 or 11 machine with administrator rights. AutoCAD for Mac is a different product with a different feature set — say you are on macOS before you order, not after.
• Several gigabytes of free disk space and a connection that can survive a large download.

Do these in order. Nothing below asks you to copy files into the program folder or to switch anything off.

1. Create your Autodesk account, or sign in to the one you already have, at accounts.autodesk.com. Use an email you intend to keep for years — the licence follows the address, not the computer.
2. Send that address to ROSH™ Company Labs exactly as written, and confirm which AutoCAD version and term you are getting.
3. Wait for confirmation, then reload Products and Services in your Autodesk account. AutoCAD should now be listed there, with a version and an end date.
4. Download the installer from that same page. Pick the version and language you want; the default install location is fine.
5. Run the installer with administrator rights, close other applications, and leave it alone. It is a heavy product and the install is not quick.
6. Launch AutoCAD. At the sign-in window, use the same email and password, and complete two-step verification if you have it switched on.
7. If you are asked how you want to activate, choose the account sign-in. Do not choose “enter a serial number” — that path belongs to other licence types.
8. Let the first launch finish, then open or start a drawing.

If AutoCAD opens into its normal workspace and your name shows at the top right, activation is done.

Do not judge it by the fact that the program opened. The check that counts happens at Autodesk, where nobody else decides what you see.

Sign in at manage.autodesk.com with your own address and open Products and Services. AutoCAD should appear with its version, the seat assigned to your name, and a subscription end date. Write that date down. Inside the software, the account menu at the top right shows the address you are signed in with, and Help then About gives the exact version and build.

The test that matters: the licence appears under an address you control, and you can reset that password on your own, without asking anyone for a code. If you cannot, you are using someone else’s account rather than holding a licence — and the difference shows up the day the term expires or the password changes. Finally, confirm the version matches what your office or your school expects. A DWG saved in a recent format will only open in an older AutoCAD if you deliberately save it down.

Most of what goes wrong is the account, not the software.

• AutoCAD does not appear in your account: the licence probably went to a different address, or you are signed into an old education account you forgot you had. Sign out fully, sign back in, and compare the address letter by letter.
• The sign-in window spins, or says it cannot connect: try another network, check the machine’s date and time, and pause a heavy antivirus or company proxy long enough to sign in once. Office and campus networks block it more often than people expect.
• You need an older release for a client’s files: subscribers can install a limited number of previous versions from the same download page; Autodesk publishes the current limit.
• It worked, then stopped after several weeks offline: this kind of licence expects the machine to reach Autodesk from time to time. Connect, sign in again, and it returns.
• The install fails halfway: usually disk space, or an earlier version that was only half removed. Autodesk publishes an uninstall tool for clearing leftovers.

The end date in your Autodesk account is the whole story. Once it passes, AutoCAD stops opening as a licensed product and the sign-in prompt simply leads nowhere. Nothing more dramatic than that happens.

Your drawings are untouched. DWG files are yours, they sit on your own disk, and no expiry deletes them. To read them during a gap, Autodesk publishes a free desktop viewer and a free web viewer: you can look and print, but not carry on drafting.
