CapCut Pro vs DaVinci Resolve — speed and captions against colour grading and a free tier that is genuinely capable

CapCut is ByteDance’s editor. It began on the phone and still thinks like a phone app: the timeline at the bottom, auto captions in one tap, a library of templates built for vertical video. It runs on Android, iOS, Windows, macOS and in a browser, and the same project follows you between them. CapCut Pro is the paid tier that lifts the export ceiling, removes the premium-template watermark and opens the full AI toolkit.

DaVinci Resolve is Blackmagic Design’s post-production suite. It started life as a colour grading system for film and television, and grading is still its centre of gravity. Editing, Fusion for compositing, Fairlight for audio mixing and the Deliver page all sit inside one application, on Windows, macOS, Linux and iPad.

The structural difference that matters: Resolve has a free version that is not a trial and does not watermark your exports. Most of the program is in it. CapCut’s free tier is a reduced version of a subscription product. That single fact shapes everything below.

Speed first, and the fact that it runs on hardware you already have. A reel that takes forty minutes to assemble on a traditional timeline takes ten here, because the operations creators repeat most have become single buttons: auto captions, background removal, beat-matched cuts, subject tracking, reframing for every aspect ratio.

• It works on a mid-range phone. Resolve does not.
• Auto captions with ready-made styling. English and French come out usable. Moroccan Darija comes out rough, so budget time to retype it.
• A licensed music and sound library, so a client video does not get muted on Instagram.
• Projects sync between phone, desktop and browser, so you can start on the bus and finish at a desk.
• Templates that match the formats people are actually watching, which matters when a client asks for something that looks like their own feed.

The honest limit: most of the AI features run on CapCut’s servers, not on your machine. No connection, no auto captions. And your work lives inside a subscription — let it lapse and the Pro assets stop working.

Colour, first. Resolve grades with nodes rather than sliders: correct an exposure, then key only the skin tones, then track a window onto a face for the length of a shot, and judge all of it on real scopes instead of by eye on a phone screen. If a client shot log footage on a proper camera, this is where those files turn into an image.

• It reads camera raw and log formats directly, including Blackmagic RAW and the common cinema formats.
• Fairlight is a full audio mixer, not a volume slider. Fusion brings node-based compositing into the same application.
• Multicam, proxies, and projects with hundreds of clips stay manageable. Long-form does not fall apart.
• Everything runs locally. No connection required, no cloud queue, no monthly renewal.

What you pay instead: hardware and weeks. Resolve wants a dedicated graphics card and generous memory, and it stays unpleasant on a thin laptop with integrated graphics. The interface assumes you know what a node is. Blackmagic gives away the manual and full training courses, and you will need them.
